Weekly Discussion Post for 10/31

Please post your weekly link to a source that you've found regarding the class theme of the "American Dream" as a part of American culture OR one of the research topics you are exploring.

As always, guidelines are the following:

For participation, we will post a link by every Monday to a source (article, movie, blog, etc) relating toeither the class theme of the formation of the American Dream or your own individual research topic. Post a short summary of how the source relates to the aforementioned topic (1-2 sentences).

    This is the preview of the book "Myth of the Model Minority: Asian Americans Facing Racism, Second Edition" by Rosalind S. Chou. The main thing I'd like to focus on is the preface of the first edition in which Chou talks about how she felt whenever she brings up the injustices that Asian Americans face. She felt as if she was disregarding other POC and their struggles. This is exactly what I'd like to focus on in my research topic.

    I found this article which talks about the American Dream and how many Americans can't even afford this dream. I found it interesting that while no country's average household could afford the American Dream in their own countries, two countries were actually closer to achieving the American Dream in their own countries than the United States. The article also briefly talks about inflation and how that makes the American Dream is going to become harder and harder to achieve.

    This was an interesting read about how the American dream is killing us because it is no longer as easily accessible as it used to be. As land is being consumed and job availability is declining due to technological advancements and increased competition, the American Dream is something only a select few are able to reach

    4. I believe that offshoring jobs is currently the biggest killer of the American Dream. With so many jobs becoming unavailable and the cost of living going up, it is impossible to think that the classic American Dream can happen to every American
      I think that the American Dream should be redefined for the individual instead of the whole country having one goal. Not everybody wants to have kids or live in a house in the suburbs of Long Island.

Today's post is "America the Beautiful" because this song summarizes the American ideas of building this country from the ground up and describes aspects of the American dream... It talks about the U.S. being a country full of potential, freedom, and "undimmed by human tears".

    The American Dream for some immigrants is to come to America and have their children attend the best colleges and make a better living. This article talks about the pros and cons to attending college and if it's really worth the cost.

I think that it is very unfortunate that when most people go to college, they are forced into debt or usually go into a field that they would be miserable in because it is most likely to get them paid more. While I'm sure many more people would like to go into a more artistic or musical field, most people would rather not take the risk of the degree even if they were passionate about the subject.

    Michelle Obama explains how with all accomplishments our ancestors have done we can surely achieve anything. This attributes to the American Dream because it provides hope that anything is possible as long as you work hard for it.

  8. one of the research topics that I'm considering is the issue of the second amendments. In recent history the topic of gun culture in America has been brought to light with tragedies and shootings. This brings up the issue of if the second amendment should have revisions made to it or remain the same. Many pro-gun advocates argue that guns fight against guns. A gun-less society cannot protect itself. However it seems that more work should be done to protect citizens from gun violence in contemporary America.

    The Link above is the famous speech by Martin Luther King Jr. "I have a dream".This speech relates to my topic as there had been many fights for civil right yet it seem there is still mass racism in this country, this speech shows the dream king had and yet there are still problem today.

    Lydia, the author of this blog post, talks about the key points in “Yes Means Yes!: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape,” the book is an anthology which is made up of numerous perspectives, one particular writing resonated with me this week: the sixteenth chapter by Brad Perry, “Hooking Up with Healthy Sexuality: The Lessons Boys Learn (And Don’t) About Sexuality, and Why A Sex-Positive Rape Prevention Paradigm Can Benefit Everyone Involved.”
    The author gives his own personal accounts of his boyhood from talking to one of his snot-nosed little friends’ hormone driven teenage older brother, Perry and his friends learned the following about sexual encounters with girls:

    1. It is possible that girls will actually want to do sexy things with you
    2. Getting girls to do stuff with you usually requires what he called a “loosening agent” – alcohol or marijuana
    3. The guy usually makes the first move

    The Epic of America( 1931) by James Truslow Adams.


    This article is from The Atlantic and I couldn't help, but notice that it was quite interesting and detailed in many ways. To begin with, this articles states that The American Dream will never die. In "The Atlantic" provides us with many readings supporting the American Dream itself.For instance, The Epic of America in 1931 was a book written by James Truslow Adams. James Adams defines the American Dream as the “dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.”James Adams believes that every American should re-evaluate their beliefs on The American Dream. For instance, Truslow illustrates in his book that that the American Dream does not demonstrate a mission to become wealthy,, but a vision for personal fulfillment.
    In Addition, The Atlantic also further mentions how Eleanor Roosevelt ( the first lady) responds to the American Dream. Eleanor Roosevelt quoted
    ''The future will be determined by the young, and there is no more essential task today, it seems to me, than to bring before them once more, in all its brightness, in all its splendor and beauty, the American dream, lest we let it fade, too concerned with ways of earning a living or impressing our neighbors or getting ahead or finding bigger and more potent ways of destroying the world and all that is in it." Therefore, Roosevelt believes that the future is determined by the younger generation which initially builds up the American Dream. This quote can be found in Eleanor Roosevelts essay "What Has Happened to The American Dream?". During the Cold War, Roosevelt demands a re-dedication to the 'American Dream' for the progress of country and that of the world to improve.

    Apologies for my lateness, but apparently our votes on the 8th will decide if our American Dream is achievable. I don't find that particularly valid unless laws were imposed to impede upon particular peoples' rights
