ReplyDeleteThis blog mainly discusses Puerto Rico's economic problems and how governmental reform may signal prosperity. The title of this commentary is interesting. The American Dream can be affected by Puerto Rico. That puts a lot of things into perspective
This economic problem is seen not only in Puerto Rico, but many islands such as Haiti where many live in poverty.

DeleteThis John Oliver segment discusses Puerto Rico and the injustices it faces. Many people forget that while not an official state, Puerto Rico is still a part of America and people often turn a blind eye to the problems they face.

ReplyDeleteThe film fight club starts with the plot of a group of people who feel the need to do something more in life, forming fight club. What they didn't realize is the plan already set in motion of blowing up building where credit information to erase debt. This correlates to the American dream as most people work meaningless jobs to gain material possession and things like debt hold us down from getting further in life, affecting credit scores..etc.
The group members of fight club in a way found their own American Dream. Blowing stuff up.

ReplyDeleteA foreign perspective on the American Dream. It's a dramedy (drama/comedy) by a Filipino filmmaker who's based in Los Angeles. It portrays a poor man who wants to help his mom beat cancer. The man's father is already in America, however, the reality is that the father drinks and gambles the money away and sends little back home. The movie captures the struggles of those who believe that the Dream is worth attaining in order to better their lives. Which raises the question of whether the Dream is worth all the sacrifices these people make, or is the Dream another American propaganda to lure people into it's capitalistic prison?

ReplyDeleteIt looks like we aren't the only ones trying to figure out exactly what the definition of the "American Dream" is. This poll from 2014 covered 6 different potential aspects, including "Personal Freedom" at the top at 78%, "Having Enough Free Time" at 67% and "Achieving Affluence" at the bottom at 23%. Which big ones do you think they left out?
Tbh "personal freedom" didn't really come to mind. It would be interesting if they do the poll again and see if these numbers switch at all due to current events 🙃

ReplyDeleteAlthough many people don't think this is possible this video talks about and gives tips on how to start your own business. It shows how it is still possible to live the American Dream and work your way up.

ReplyDeleteThought this was interesting since the author claims that Vegas is the place where the American Dream is most alive due to factors such as affordable housing and a diverse economy. It's hard to see a place where people go to get married after one night stands and lose all their money on slot machines as a place that fosters the American dream.

ReplyDeleteThis is a classic story of 21st Century questioning of gender roles in a relationship. It's funny to see that all this started from some lady's comment on a wife buying her husband underwear. It just goes to show that older people have different values.

ReplyDeleteOwning a house is an aspect of the old American Dream. In today's society, the rate of homeownership is consistent through all age groups but for millennials its is cut in half at 34%.
WOW successfully owning a house seems a little impossible to the working class!

It probably is not a credible source because GQ is a magazine that judges people based on looks alone, however, it is interesting look in retrospect on how everyone was scared of a Trump presidency and how we are even more scared now that he has won. Believe it or not, but the famous movie Leonardo DiCaprio starred in "The Great Gatsby" relates to The American Dream. ( SPOILER ALERT) The movie takes place in the year of 1922 basically a story told by Nick Caraway who meets a man named Jake Gatsby who throws extravagant parties everyday Saturdays.
The Valley of the Ashes was very symbolic and important part part of both the book and the movie. The Valley of the Ashes basically represents the horrific consequences and results of America’s obsession with wealth.
Another symbol shown in the movie which relates to The American Dream was the green light that symbolizes Jakes hopes and dreams for a life with Daisy.

Sociologist Michael Kimmel wrote a book called "Angry White Men", he did his research on the extreme right wing. Kimmel started interviewing white proud racists, one by one, to find out exactly what they were thinking and feeling.
What are the Angry White Men so angry about? It’s pretty simple, Kimmel said: Their station in society has changed. We are at the end of an era of “unquestioned male entitlement.” To these men, downward mobility feels like emasculation, It signals weakness, dependency, effeminacy — and it can lead directly to blaming and scapegoating others.
This reading relates to my research topic as it gives informative approach towards why societal progression is limited
